Perhaps if patriarchal theory could be derived without a consideration of the facts, it might appear to be founded on crude prejudice. This embarrassed social anthropologists of the time because of its obvious failure to consider ethnological data, and because its simplistic, non-evolutionary approach made Maine an unpleasant fellow-traveller. In 1861 Sir Henry Maine, a professor of jurisprudence, wrote Ancient Law, a defense of patriarchal theory based on the New Testament, the Hindu Laws of Manu, and the Twelve Tables of Rome, from which he extrapolated a case for the foundation of all known societies from a common patriarchal basis. But feminist attacks on female subordination demanded that women’s inferior role be defended and justified, either as a continuation of a desirable tradition, or as the latest stage of an evolutionary sequence. Until about 1860, very few questioned that the family as they knew it was an inevitable, innate social institution based on the authority of a male family head. An especially obvious example of this occurs in postulates concerning the historical development of family structures. Since its origins social anthropology has been a battlefield for political argument. Background: Victorian Theories of the Origin of the Family

Every inch of sea level rise that we avert keeps that much more of New York-and Miami, and Shanghai, and Dhaka, and Ho Chi Minh City-from crumbling. No matter what the earth system’s tipping points ultimately are, every fraction of a degree of warming that we avoid means saving millions of lives-people who could play in the cities where, we hope, we’ll have killed the patriarchy dead. Personally, I find it easier to deal when I can visualize victories alongside defeats. there’s no struggle for social justice that’s not also a climate struggle. We’ll be fighting to prevent runaway climate change for a hundred years, and dealing with its effects for thousands. But we also need access to scientifically and socially plausible stories about our cli- mate future that aren’t Al Gore-cheesy or unrelentingly grim. We need to hold on to work on violence and destruction. Still, a dash of vanilla can be refreshing. So yes, the future of New York 2140 is a bit vanilla as fantasies go. If you have not read any of these, then this review won’t make sense. The final book (thinking of Wool Omnibus as book 1, Shift Omnibus as book 2 and Dust as book 3) provides a satisfying conclusion. (Collected they are almost 700 pages, but really are one book in three parts.) Then in 20 Howey wrote three segments that provided back story to the Wool series. Originally just conceived of as a 50 pages short story, Howey quickly wrote four more short stories that rounded out the original story into a full length book. Hugh Howey broke into internet fame just three years ago when he published his short story Wool. Links to my reviews of the earlier books are at the bottom of the page. Reposting this 2014 review because this book, and the two earlier collections that made up the trilogy are all on sale for $2.99 each on kindle ( Wool Omnibus and Shift). 5/12/2023 0 Comments Smoke and bone bookI enjoyed the Chimaera and their backstory.
